Postbag: over the hills and far away
17 November 2010
Grimsby, in all its infinite variety, in microcosm, here, below. Just for you. Return the favour. Write.
Not just Great
Apparently Grimsby isn't Great any more, it's Greater.

Grimsby in literature
I was interested in the letter by Joel Wheatley in the last postbag. While you directed him towards media references, I fancy it was the broader cultural references that intrigued him.
It so happened that I was recently reading an obscure novel, Faraway by JB Priestley. The novel, a study in illusion, features a man, long stranded in the South Pacific whose regular refrain "I was a Grimsby man" frames his insistence that the entire East coast of England has been destroyed in a pan-European war.
Better than thinking of the Mariners playing non-League football, I suppose.

Letters Ed responds: Thanks Bill. If you, or anyone, has any other literary references to Grimsby or Cleethorpes, share them.
