Postbag: If Grimsby is a state of mind, call the psychiatrist

29 June 2011

Harsh on Rob Duffy

C.A,

With pre-season starting in the morning I can not remember a time I have been less positive regards GTFC. The quality of signings so far has been a little underwhelming, especially so if we compare recent signings to last seasons acquisitions: for Mick Cummins read Craig Disley for Lee Ridley read Gary Silk for Charles Ademeno read Liam Hearn for Shaun Pearson read Scott Garner for Rob Duffy read Damian Spencer (and even that may be harsh on Duffy)

It seems to me that despite the various GTFC message boards hailing the dumping of the "deadwood" and the employment of "young, thrusting, committed" new players (see above) nothing much has really changed and my enthusiasm for the forthcoming season remains at an all time low. The players we have signed have similar reputations to those signed last season under Woods. Its not the marked difference proclaimed by some.

The end of season ravings of Rob Scott in the GET, (a man so angry I feel sorry for his kids, should he have any) left me feeling quite alienated. He seemed to be on a mission to tell everyone how rubbish every Town player was and how awful their attitudes were (something John Fenty seems to have taken on board and continued recently with his pointless insulting of contracted players). I cannot help but feel this was a ploy to get the disgruntled supporters onside with the managers. We were 9th when H&S rumbled into town and we only went down after that so we can't have been that bad can we? Perhaps Neil Woods was a miracle worker to get such workshy pathetic excuses for footballers so far up the league? He must have been if you believe we were as bad a team as Shouty and Shorty will tell you. Some people have, however, fallen for this.

As Neil Woods trudged off home, GTFC mug and Mighty Mariner signed picture in one hand P45 in the other I was pretty gutted. After the brief stewardship of caretaker manager, physio, assistant manager, physio, extreme weather short shorts wearer Dave Moore of David Moore Physiotherapy M.C.S.P. S.R.P John Fenty announces his delight at securing number one choice Steve Burr, number two target Mark Cooper, third on the list duo Rob Scott and Paul Hurst as the new management team at Blundell Park. Those in the know regarding the lower echelons of the non-league pyramid have proclaimed this to be a good decision.

I hope this season is better. I'm just not so sure it will be any different at all.

The shining

It's very funny how Paul Hurst is tipping everyone to 'shine'? Barca will shine and now Telford. Will the Mariners shine?

Everything's just Double Plus Good

I've nearly finished reading George Orwell's 1984 and I just read the headline story on Mariners World (the same headline I read each year)

Season Ticket Sales Up!!!!

My thoughts are that season ticket sales are not up.....that Oceania is in fact at war with Eastasia and not Eurasia...etc etc

Candyfloss cladding

The Diary of 15 June is right. Black and white stripes are always going to look pretty much the same, but what about the away kit? Looks pretty smart. I'd even contemplate getting one if I didn't know it's going to be one of those clingy, shiny static-electricity-y shirts which I hate.

Maybe if they made it in cotton rather than out of candyfloss?

He's a very naughty fish

I think I have found the earliest reference to the cult of Cod Almighty on this plaque in St Mary's Church, Lead, near Tadcaster.

Your web-site is hideous. Whoever did it before was at least funny occasionally.

Letters Ed responds: Feedback is good. We like feedback. It can help if you can give us some clue what it is you are feeding back about, but sometimes its fun to guess: you don't like the shade of red we use? ... You think the home page picture illustrating Richard Lord's jinx article is a bit unoriginal? ... You think the letters editor overuses "..."s? Or do you feel we have been giving the Club too hard a time lately. Who knows? Strangely, a similar thought has been in my head quite often late

was the shade of red you find hideous? Oh.

Maybe it's time for more light-hearted articles again and in the meantime maybe the team will start playing better and moving up the league; Fenty will f**k off and leave our club alone; Paul Groves might come back to manage us... I don't know but like a watched kettle never boiling perhaps ignoring the club management and performance on the field will do the trick?

Is it just me or does Sepp Blatter seem to have remodelled himself and his style of dictatorship on Robert Mugabe? Single candidate elections, directing his spite at England, veiled threats, ignoring corruption.

Hold on, that's not cheerful....

My thoughts are with you, truthfully

Town players v Played for Town

I was struck by the distinction Miss Guest Diary drew on 23 June between those who truly represent the club and those to whom we are merely an employer. I think we all understand the distinction, but would find it hard to define. It is not to do with being good: Michael Reddy, talented as he was, merely played for Town, whereas Livvo, with all his limitations, was a proper Town player, so it would be possible to make up a quite decent side of mere "Played for Town"s (Mildenhall or Coyne in goal, Richard Smith in central defence, Shaun Cunnington in midfield) and a rather dodgy one of Town players. It is not even to do with being born in or living in the area - Peter Bore only played for Town.

It is of course very subjective, and no doubt we'll disagree about some players: I'd definitely put Mendonca in the "Town players" and no doubt some of your readers will disagree with the assessments I've made.

It might make something else to write about, as a distraction from the next utterances of John Fenty?

Thanks Bill. We would indeed enjoy publishing any thoughts you have on that, or any other issue, in the next Postbag. Email postbag@codalmighty.com with your thoughts.
