It’s a local club, for local people

25 April 2023

Oh my days, what a shirt! Some might find it strange that a club is releasing a one-off shirt for a game at the end of the season but what a logo! In all the designer discussions that focus on what font should be used for a particular project, nothing makes its importance clearer than the emotions that font evokes in Town fans in their mid-thirties and up.

All this stuff doesn’t get us three points? No, but it certainly makes me very proud that the club is forward thinking, modernising and pleased to be moving in this direction. Plus it reflects well on the area. For those who moan every time the club does something that isn't directly related to the last or next game played, just ignore it or take comfort that it raises our profile when we are entering a period of negotiation with current and potential players. I, for one, love it, and so do many others given how quickly the shirts have sold. My only negative is realising that the Food Town logo was first used in 1988; I can't possibly be that old.

As an exile, I still couldn't help but pick up on the changes that are afoot at Radio Humberside and namely a certain Burnsy leaving his show. Let me be honest here, I was never particularly a fan. Nothing personal, just I've only ever listened to Humberside for the football commentaries, and now I'm an exile, I can only get those via the paid for streaming service. I will never understand why we have to leave a Town game to find out what's happening at Hull or Scunthorpe, it really rankles, but it's nothing personal.

Thing is, to me Burnsy always came across as Hull through and through but took an interest in Town when there was the chance of a Wembley trip or equivalent. I don't blame him; I would struggle to show genuine enthusiasm for other clubs even if I was paid to do so. I would have to do it with my fingers crossed behind my back. I just hope that the sports commentaries aren't affected and maybe Burnsy continues his niche there so I will still be irritated when we have to leave the Town commentary. I never like to see someone losing their job, unless they're a government minister or MP that is.

Finally, another trip to Blundell Park this evening. The final evening game for a while and it doesn't look like it will be any warmer than last week, which felt like the coldest game of the season. There's always an excitement going to a night game, even if it means I get very little sleep tonight due to a very early start on Wednesday mornings. I even look forward to my “Footy Scran” tea now that we have decent catering.

Crewe Alexandra. Not an awful lot to say about them this season really. They look in a very similar situation to us, just a few places and four points below. In theory it's a chance for us to try a few things and hopefully the game is not as impacted by the wind as last week. I'm enjoying seeing a few of the less experienced players get a chance and hope this evening continues that. A win would put us back in the top half, exactly where I would like us to finish.

UTM!
