The Diary

Lies, damned lies and statistics!

17 October 2023

I read Miss Guest Diary yesterday and thought maybe I should type "Ditto" and not bother with anything else. I'm not sure that would really constitute a diary so maybe I could type it 500 times and that would do? Maybe not. I have not yet bounced back from Saturday but I will.

Like Miss Guest Diary I find it tough when the fans get really negative rather than trying to gee up the team. I understand where they are coming from and that each and every one of them do their own jobs to a 100 percent every day but hey, we can't all be perfect. I have to say that I was so unengaged on Saturday that I didn't even register Waterfall getting sent off. When was the last time we heard a "get in to them" when Town were sitting back and not getting to grips with a game? At least that would show a bit of positive energy from the crowd but we were strangely flat.

Now that that's over, for my own mood, I prefer to focus on where we are. Less than a third of the season played and we've been beset by injuries to first choice players. Yes, we seem to swap around all the time but that's almost certainly why. Yes, we have played some of the tougher teams but we all know that won't be an excuse for ever. One of the bonuses of the frankly lacklustre performance on Saturday was that the bloke behind us who has verbal diarrhoea left early. Even some of those around us who want Hurst out were quite pleased about that. We don't say anything to him as he's with his grandson but how we would dearly like to.

You might be interested to look at the Twenty First Group data analysis. I believe they advise Town. We are exactly where we were expected to be at this point of the season with an average of 1.2 points per game and "survival" as the likely outcome. Data has its place but I don't think for a minute that Hurst or the owners will settle for that as an aspiration year-in, year-out. It's obviously better than relegation but if there's one thing we could all agree on it is that we want to see Town pushing for the play-offs. Now there's something to bring us together.

Look after yourselves, it's only football. UTM!
