You can’t win them all!
12 December 2023
Saturday turned into one of those football days that are close to perfect. It could probably only have been topped off with a trip to Steels before or after the game instead of heated up, left-over Chinese. Ah well you can't win them all.
It wasn't easy for much of the game and by "easy" I mean one of those games when you just believe you're going to come away with three points from the kick-off. Do we ever? There probably wasn't any Town fan who didn’t feel that we were going to concede. If I think about the last 15 minutes or so I can still feel that tension. I don't think I breathed for most of it (well obviously I did, but you know what I mean). Don't you love those football days when afterwards you get to spend time with other Town fans just chewing over the afternoon. I didn't know many of them but the high from the win meant a positive mood. A couple of sherbets probably helped too, though that's optional. We all have our ways of winding down after a game but it's interesting to get fresh perspectives.
It was heartening to see both of our fullbacks in the league team of the week. Congratulations to Glennon and Mullarkey. Very well deserved; they were both on fire. It was great to see others finding a bit of form too; Hunt to name but one. He showed some of his skills and had one of his better outings in a long time. Hopefully our manager can keep this positive direction going.
Miss Guest Diary noted the role of the ground staff in her diary yesterday and their huge effort to get the game on at the weekend. There was a Tweet yesterday from the Senior Head of Grounds at Town showing the pitch recovering and it made me smile. Like the tractor watch between seasons I love how we get to see these things. It's one of the real positives of social media. Before that the people who maintained the pitch were fairly anonymous. There would be an occasional story in the Telegraph, particularly if it snowed heavily when there would be an appeal for fans to go down to help clear the snow just before the game. Perhaps there will be opportunities to highlight other roles that keep the club ticking over. I'm sure it could be tastefully done and not at all arm-rubbing creepiness. You know what I mean.
