Has he won the Lottery?

28 May 2024

Mr Target Demographic writes: Mixed emotions today as although the bank holiday weekend has come to a close, the 28th of May does mark the two-year anniversary of that special game at Wrexham in that incredible playoff run.

As such, it's only fitting to recount how I watched the game, as it was anything from your typical viewing experience. Well, the first half was typical, I simply watched it in my local pub. However, as the second half began I had to go to work, where I proceeded to watch the rest of the game on my phone propped up on the bar. When the fifth goal went in I couldn't contain myself anymore and started running around the place with the customers looking at me as if I was a weirdo. I got asked if I'd just won the lottery, to which I replied with "oh no, better". I was quickly asked to calm down by my manager, who didn't quite understand why it meant so much to me.

I'm not sure if I will ever get tired of reading or writing about those two weeks. To date, I still believe them to be the best period of my life in and out of football with memories made I will never lose. From taking over Nottingham, passing my driving test, and being told to calm down at work after my reaction to Waterfall’s goal, I didn’t believe those two weeks could give me anymore. Then the All Town Aren't We film dropped and I was able to share those magical two weeks with my partner, who had struggled to appreciate why football and Grimsby meant so much to me.

After she saw it, she got it and finally understood why I love football so much. She felt the emotion, albeit only a fragment, and it made her too start to fall in love with football. I never cry at films, but All Town Aren’t We was the exception. We lose a lot of memories as we move through life, but I know I will never lose any of those games. Where I was, what I was doing, who I was with, I wouldn’t change any of it for any amount of love nor money.

In other news, the Main Stand is getting some well-deserved maintenance over the summer. As a regular there I am pleased to see it having some work done, although I am sad to be losing some of those roof props. I had grown quite fond of them and had built a different relationship with each as they jostled for who could block my view for the majority of the game. They'll have to install some new ‘NO SMOKING’ signs now, otherwise how will people know?

Well it's time to publish and the sands have run out on a follow-up to the apparent teaser from the club this morning. Be it a Caribou Energy Jizz advert, the return of Paul Hurst or something in between, it will just have to wait for tomorrow's diary. UTM
