The game's gone
23 August 2024
Your A46 Diary gets to steal the thunder of Miss Guest Diary by being the first diarist to comment after the 'weekend's' game. So, I'm assuming this is a first: a Friday diary that works as a review rather than a preview.
A bank holiday weekend without a Town game. I don't like it and in a couple of seasons' time I’m thinking few of us will like it at all.
Sky has no interest in Grimsby Town Football Club. We will not increase their subscriptions, we will not raise their viewing figures, we will not give them a boost in their advertising revenue. We will, in short, do nothing for them at all and all they will do for us is mess about with our fixture list while they cram us into their overcrowded stables with the rest of the nags.
We'll be living in hope that we'll be a poor man's Raheem Sterling looking over the fence at Chelsea's first team, contacting our agent and making the awkward decision about which number will have to go at the front of our six-figure salary, while living in dread that we'll be Oldham'd out of any meaningful existence unless we agree to be a feeder club for Derby County's U23 squad. Derby will be the club applying for re-election to Premiere League 2 every other year and complaining vociferously about the quality of players its vassal club is producing.
But put up with it we will. Beggars, etc. Last night's game was... least said, soonest mended, as my grandma would've said. No review here; if you wanted one you've already read and listened to your fill. Stay calm and think of as many things non-Town as possible.
What to do with the now-empty Saturday that would otherwise have been a big day out for 2000+ of us? Fingers crossed Sri Lanka will make a game of the first test and still give us something to look out for this weekend.
