7 February 2007
It's day two of Town's annual 'please support Town' promotional exercise, and the campaign has already got through four different names. Material mailed out to season ticket holders late last week and published yesterday on the club's official website and in the Grimsby Telegraph had used the various titles 'Town's 12th Man', 'Be Town's 12th Man' and 'Be The 12th Man', and an item on the OS today begins with the headline 'Be Town's 12th Man' but then uses an official campaign logo which says TEAM UP WITH GTFC. Possibly more importantly, the club is preparing for its highest attendance this season with around 6,000 expected for the visit of Bristol Rovers this Saturday, and has announced details for the tickets and free coach travel to the Mariners' game a week on Saturday at Mansfield, who have allocated 1,000 places to visiting fans, an initial 500 of whom will be whisked to and from the match courtesy of the club. "Everybody who books a seat on a coach will receive a 'special ticket' holding the details of which coach they will be on," explains the club, pronouncing the words 'special ticket' in the voice of a primary school teacher speaking to a pupil with profound and multiple learning difficulties.
Player news now, and two of the blighters have made it into the official fourth division team of the week thing following Town's fluky win at Boston on Saturday. Peter Bore - who is straight, apparently - and the criminally underrated Danny Boshell line up among the basement's top performers of the weekend. Should Lord Buckley wish to add further temporary performers to their ranks, the OS says he'll be able to do so from today - although every other news source the Diary can find insists that the 'loan window' reopens tomorrow. With any luck, this discrepancy will prove academic, cos I reckon AB needs to carry on working with what he's got for the time being rather than destabilise the squad all over again with more loan signings - don't you?
"Today's scheduled Pontins Holidays League game against Darlington has been switched to Wednesday. The fixture will kick off at 2pm at the [sponsored stadium name removed]. The Darlington game has now been postponed," announced Town's official website yesterday, in a sort of minute-by-minute text commentary with a difference. Clearing up any possible confusion, today's Grimsby Telegraph reports that yes, the game has been postponed, though this only begs the question of why it was rearranged in the first place.
"Afternoon chaps," writes Paul Willerton in an email to the Diary. There's only one of me, Paul, but a very good afternoon to you nonetheless. "I've been trawling the internet since Saturday, and haven't found anywhere yet that's producing a desktop wallpaper/screensaver of the thrashing of the cabbage-kickers. Can you oblige?" Sorry, Paul - I haven't seen one either, although if nobody has released yet a prog/folk/psych album entitled The Thrashing of the Cabbage-Kickers then someone ought to soon.
