7 August 2007

Voiceover: "The summer sale starts tomorrow at DFS!"
Customers: "Not another sale!"
Voiceover: "No! Actually we only have two sales a year, when there's double savings on a great range and absolutely everything is reduced."
Customers: "Everything?"
Voiceover: "Everything!"
The Diary: "Pass the AK47, Mrs Diary, dear. I'm going out for a walk."

While popular northern furniture retailers are beginning to address directly their customers' preconceptions about sales gimmickry, Grimsby Town Football Club are still going through the yearly ritual of extending the deadlines for season ticket discounts and doing their best to make it look like a spontaneous decision in response to unfolding events, rather than a carefully choreographed annual routine. Foot-dragging fans now have until this Saturday to commit for the season and get 23 games for the price of 19, club officials have unsurprisingly revealed. "Incredibly, (& maybe after the decent performance on Saturday) the club sold another 10 season tickets on Monday, taking over £1000. Taking this into consideration, The club feel that there's a few fans out there who now think they've missed out on the discount. As we have taken an amazing £415,000, smashing last years total of £400,000 - we thought we must give a last chance to supporters to renew or buy a season ticket," explains Town's superb new official website, as if they don't do the same thing every year with regularity you could set your watch by.

An item on the SNOS concerning Town's women's team, which promises that "The Mariners will be embracing the ladies this season", has attracted the attention of Diary reader Dave the Engineer. "Apart from the domestic upheavals this may cause, it puts a new slant on 'Up the Mariners'," guffaws Dave, adding his best Sid James cackle. "See you in the Rutland Saturday." Yep, see you there, mate. I might be a bit late cos ITV are showing Carry On Camping.

And that's all from the Diary on another disappointingly uneventful summer's day. Make dead sure you come back in 24 hours' time, though - not just for the Diary, but for CA as a whole, since we're going to try and get our '07-08 season index online tomorrow, with more player profiles and opponent catch-up thingies you can shake a stick at. And believe me, we've shook. T'ra!
