Diary - Friday 3 August 2007

3 August 2007

Hello, Miss Guest Diary with you on the eve of what looks like being the final pre-season friendly following the bizarre goings-on down in the Fens. This year it feels to me like the pre-season games are dragging on forever. Perhaps it's because there have been no tales from the boot camp or excursions to Ibiza or the Isle of Man, just a rather mundane tour of small Yorkshire and Lincolnshire clubs, culminating in tomorrow's game against Scunny. This has reminded me that when I got together with my partner nearly 20 years ago, the first time he brought me north (me being, as I have said before, from the south) he took me on a short tour of Lincolnshire, to places like Mablethorpe, Immingham and Scunthorpe to demonstrate that there are worse places to be than Grimsby. Well, he convinced me; perhaps Town should have tried this with Martin Paterson.

Talking of worse places, I see Boston have signed a player currently serving a sentence at North Sea Camp open prison. Rob Wesley is to be allowed out to train and play, apparently as part of a rehabilitation scheme. It's lucky for him Steve Evans has deserted the sinking ship as the authorities probably wouldn't want Wesley associating with known criminals while he's out.

Talking of prison, Guest Diary confided to me this week that one of his life's ambitions, as yet unfulfilled, is to go to prison. Well I have been, twice, to Holloway Women's Prison and it was very scary. I hasten to add that I was not an inmate but there in a professional capacity to interview a woman serving a sentence for impersonating a nurse. Fortunately for some Town signings in the last decade, and one right-back in particular, it is not a criminal offence to impersonate a footballer or a few of them could be joining Wesley at North Sea Camp.

Well, that's it from me - I'm off for a slap-up lunch in Spilsby followed by a gentle stroll around Snipedales: two of the better places to be in Lincolnshire.
