Diary - Wednesday 9 January 2008

9 January 2008

Remember the sunny optimism of early 1998? The Good Friday Agreement was about to bring peace to Northern Ireland. A national minimum wage was about to be guaranteed by law to British workers for the first time in history. And 30,000 Grimbarians travelled to Wembley after suddenly remembering they had a local football club, and cheered on their team to promotion and Football League Trophy victory, only to fuck back off en masse as soon as the new season kicked off ten weeks later. Ten years down the line a possible repeat of the latter has suddenly loomed larger following the Mariners' victory last night in the northern area semi-final of the Dulux Cup at Stockport. A report will appear on Cod Almighty this evening (or possibly first thing tomorrow morning, depending on Pat's schedule and what time CA's copy editor goes out for a curry), but the news today is that Town will play away in the first leg of the area final with Morecambe, in the week beginning 18 February, with the return at Blundell Park a week later (and another trip to Christie Park in the league on 1 March). Last one out of town, turn off everyone's mobile phone charger, and don't leave your telly on standby because it still uses electricity.
