Diary - Friday 3 August 2012

3 August 2012

I dunno about the rest of you, but your original/regular Diary wasn't remotely looking forward to the Olympics. The games had been tainted, way before they began, by the repulsive presumptuousness of sponsors. Workers on the Olympic site were suddenly disqualified from going to their regular chippy for lunch when McDonald's demanded their competition be prevented from trading. It seemed a metaphor for all that was wrong with sport and the modern world.

A week or so into the games, it's a bit different. All that was wrong before is still wrong today. But so many big grins on the faces of so many gutsy athletes have reminded us what it's all about. The Diary is a big Jessica Ennis fan, but Gemma Gibbons pretty much tipped me over the edge yesterday.

There's a certain innocence and honesty, a sense of authenticity about their emotion, that makes me wish I could get a season ticket for the Olympics and never have to watch or read another professional footballer being interviewed so long as I live.
