Miss Guest Diary writes: Town's win at Hereford on Saturday and their consequent climb to the giddy heights of 11th in the Conference Premier was somewhat overshadowed by the Tweet from Mr Cod Almighty himself to remind us that on the same day in 2001 Town were top of the old second division.
I'm going to put on my counsellor's hat to remind myself - and him - that the greatest happiness is to be achieved by living in the here and now. Repeat after me: "I will leave the past behind and overcome my regrets and disappointments by concentrating on my life in the present; by living each moment to its fullest and devoting all my attention and appreciation to that moment." Feeling better now? No, me neither, but it was worth a shot.
Anyway, back to Saturday. We eschewed the trip to Hereford - we've been there before and thought it was a bit of a dump. The football ground, that is, not the town. Instead we opted for a trip to Nottingham to see Berberian Sound Studio at the Broadway Cinema. It was gripping, but also weird and occasionally funny - a bit like the suggestion that a couple of League clubs have shown interest in signing Anthony Elding.
Unusually, it was the shorter of Town's management duo who got to talk to the BBC about Saturday's victory. Shorty caused delight in my partner by describing Southwell as "getting across the near post" to score. Anyone who sits near us at matches will know that, when he isn't shouting "foul throw!", my other half is exhorting the players to attack the near post. I have never really understood what this means and, even after seeing Southwell's goal on the Mariners Player highlights, I still don't. But, if it means scoring more goals and winning more games, then I am prepared to accept that it is a good thing.
According to the Telegraph, the victories against Mansfield and Hereford are the first back-to-back league wins Town have achieved since January. Quite why two league wins are more significant than, say, an FA Trophy win followed by a league win (which Town secured in February) is not explained. I suppose it makes Saturday's win appear more significant. This seems to be part of a recent trend in the local paper of putting an ultra-positive spin on everything Town-related - like describing Greg Pearson as "top goalscorer". Yes, I know it's factually correct but, with only two goals in six appearances, this is a superfluous accolade.
While checking the NSNOS to make sure I had my facts right for the above paragraph, I noticed a poll asking "What do you think of our new website?" The only options available were "good" and "really good". Now that is definitely putting an ultra-positive spin on things.
