Diary - Wednesday 7 November 2012

7 November 2012

And so Town lost away from home for the first time this season - typically, for us at least, to a side in the relegation zone. But let's not get het up on where the other team is in the division. The basic fact is that too many of the players representing Grimsby Town last night didn't perform - at least that's the assessment of a very angry Rob Scott in today's Telegraph. I keep meaning to put Shouty's face on one of the trains from Thomas the Tank Engine, with steam coming out of his head, especially for days that follow defeats. But I just don't have the time these days.

It's not escaped your West Yorkshire Diary's attention that, in the wider context of the season, last night's 3-2 defeat to Hyde has stalled our promotion car at the traffic lights. But to go eight months without losing a single away game says something about the character and both the physical and mental toughness of this team. Whether it's a blip or the start of a bigger slip will only be revealed in good time. Saturday's home game against Woking will shine more light on which way our season could go.

But for now let's look at things positively. We're fourth in the league after a solid start to the season. That's not bad when you're missing your best player and top scorer from last season. Talking of top scorers, Ross Hannah has become ours with five - finally surpassing Nathan Pond's four from central defence. Despite the goals conceded last night we still have the best defensive record in the league. I'm sort of running out of things now, but that wasn't a bad list while it lasted, eh?

Other than the report and reaction from last night's defeat, there really isn't much else to tell you about - maybe apart from the time I was convinced Everton full-back Tony Hibbert was working part-time in my local supermarket. But I recently found out it wasn't him.
