Mardy Diary writes: Cup action this weekend, then, and there's not a lot to be said about it that hasn't already been said before. The Telegraph is running one of its ex-player-who-played-at-Wembley-thinks-club-can-get-there-again pieces. I personally want to hear from an ex-player who doesn't think we'll get there. Who hasn't the Telegraph spoken to from that Wembley team yet? Lee Nogan? Where is he, anyway?
Credit is due to the Telewag, though, with its continued and excellent coverage of other teams in our area - notably Cleethorpes Town and Grimsby Borough. I've enjoyed following the fortunes of these teams through the paper so a big thumbs up for that.
Given the lack of news today, yesterday's diarist did me a huge favour by asking for your Anthony Elding limericks. Two of you have been kind enough to help me fill this space by responding to the request. First up our Polish correspondent Jan Przeniczny has been good enough to send two.
We used to have a player called Elding,Miles Moss writes in with similar (he he!) horseplay:
Whose style of play was rather under whelming,
He tried to Gurn a bit,
Which really got on my Tit,
Enough for me to make him a Gelding.A Mariner player, called Anthony,
We saw his skills only randomly,
He thought his future was North End,
But unfortunately was condemned,
To Limerick, and total anonymity.
There once was a striker called Elding,On an unrelated matter (other than it was also covered in the Diary yesterday) Simon Shaw has written in on the subject of fixture backlog. He says "In relation to [yesterday's] diary, I think our friends at Boston can beat Canvey's fixture congestion. Here, from Ken Fox's excellent Boston United site, is their finish to the 1963-64 season."
Joined The Town but couldn't quite meld in,
Like an adonis with medallion,
He thought himself stallion,
But in truth he was more of a gelding.
Mon 13 Apr H M STAMFORD W 3-1He adds "That's 12 of their 42 league games and two cup games in 18 days, with two league games played on the same day." I remember a similar situation (in non-League) a few years back where a team had to put out two teams in the same day due to a backlog of games at the end of the season. Not sure it was this bad, but I know their youth team had to play one match while the senior team played elsewhere.
