The comforts of madness

30 August 2013

Mardy Diary writes: There seems to be a trend this season in the Telegraph running articles with one of the managers explaining why a certain player hasn't played in a particular match or series of matches. It's a valid question to ask at certain times: perhaps the strikers haven't scored for 20 games and Liam Hearn hasn't even featured on the bench; or McKeown keeps dropping the ball in his own net and Hedge hasn't been given a chance.

I think it's less of a valid question at the beginning of the season when you've got a big squad of players and none have really stood out as undroppable. But so it is again today that we have an interview with one of the managers, this time on why Scott Kerr hasn't played for a couple of games. The answer is largely unsurprising, and I don't think anyone was overly concerned that Kerr hadn't featured for a couple of games. Except perhaps the player himself.

Still, I can't really blame them for running the story as there's bugger all else to report today. We have continued our excellent recent form by putting together another match preview, which you can read here.

As the preview covers this weekend's game better than I could in the space here, it leaves me little other than to continue my search for 'Saints' and to plug a worthy charitable event.

On the former, Chris Parrott has emailed with a new suggestion: "Is the French spelling allowed? If so I claim Wimbledon's Kevin Sainte-Luce." Yes, I'll take that – good work Chris. I think I make that three, but we need at least five before my statement that you don't get any 'Saints' in the games these days becomes factually incorrect. These are just outliers.

And finally, if you can spare the time this weekend get down to Grimsby Borough, who are running a charity day in support of Kits 4 Causes. There'll still be time to get to the Town match after.

Have a good weekend.
