Fuck you, Dyke

9 May 2014

"In April 1986 the leading clubs and their supporters agreed to drop plans for a super league after being given more voting power in a reduced First Division and a bigger share of the money from TV and sponsorships. The proposers of a Premier League, who must remain anonymous until Monday, hope to woo clubs away from the League with the promise of even more money from television and commercial spin-offs.

"The prime motive behind the scheme is to create an environment which will give the England team a better chance in the World Cup and European Championship. The proposers hope to catch the mood of last summer when England reached the semi-finals of the World Cup and only went out to West Germany on penalties.

"Taking German football as a model, the plan is to regard the England team as the flagship of the domestic game and subordinate everything to their needs. It is believed that a Premier of 18 clubs would mean fewer injuries, less strain on players, more time for coaching and longer preparation for the England squad before important games."

– David Lacey, The Guardian, 6 April 1991

So we've been here before, haven't we? With the promise of a better England team and talk of 'German models'. They spoke of better coaching for kids, and a proper voice for fans, with the FA being the controlling power keeping clubs in line and ensuring the survival of those further down the chain.

And what happened? Rich clubs got richer. And more powerful. And the FA became a weakling, cowering in the corner flinching every time a Big Club looked over. Now they're desperately trying to get back in the gang by offering yet more power and money to the rich elite.

What a pathetic bunch of snivelling weasels. A fawning bunch of cock-gobbling, grey-suited sycophants. A right bunch of hands-in-the-air-please-sir obsequious twats.

First they came for more voting power and we did not speak out. Then they came for more TV revenue and we did not speak out. Now they want to take our league away from us. Time to speak out?

Town fan Lewis Horwell has already collected thousands of signatures for his petition against the proposal. Sign it and say no to League 3.
