Do not turn to idols, nor make for yourselves moulded gods
16 July 2014
Well it's all go at the mo innit. Your London Diary was checking Twitter last night to try and find the team sheet for the friendly against John McDermott's Harrogate Town FC (even though it's not actually his team, but to us it is), when there was a frenzy of tweets saying we had signed Carl Magnay at the game. I pictured scenes of Magnay turning up with his boots, asking Hurststs if he could join in, Hurststs being a big fan of his from his stint on Rupert Murdoch's Football Icon and so snapping him up there and then.
Having read today's Telewag, it seems that it wasn't that magical, but still pretty exciting. "I actually sat over at the corner of the ground with Paul (Hurst) and I signed on less than an hour before the kick-off!" says the man from Gateshead (whom we love).
So what do we know about Mr Magnay then? Well, he's from the north-east, was part of the Leeds youth set-up, went on The X Factor, sold a few records and then moved to Gateshead (whom we love) for two seasons. Now we have him. What made me chuckle was looking at all the tweets from Gateshead fans (whom we love) wishing him all the best for the next season. Fans, eh?
I think my favourite thing about Maggers is that when you google image search him, no two pictures of his face look the same. In some he looks 12. In others he looks like Steve Bruce's dad. He's 25. The main thing is, though, he looks like a footballer. No, he might not have the hair of Rodman, but he'll do for now.
'Mag the lad' came on for 22 minutes and didn't let a goal in. We scored two goals in the first half, courtesy of ScottyB123 and LJL, which takes LJL's pre-season tally to 3 in 3. We're gonna win the league. You can be my hero Lenny!
Alongside Joe Ironside was another trialist hoping to woo the boss, a young lad who is currently at part-timers Worksop. Did he have a good game? I don't know, guys. Either way, I'm getting excited. Join me. UTM.
