It's as if Ride never went dadrock

21 August 2014

If I were Neil Woodses, I'd be savouring the electric thrill of revenge today. Mind you, Neil Woodses is probably a far better human being than your original/regular Diary. He's certainly a far better football manager.

Eh? What? The former GTFC boss and intelligent forward has just watched the Walsall youth team he currently heads up stroll to an easy thrashing easy thrashing of their Grimsby counterparts. Sacked in 2011 for overseeing the Mariners to a situation more or less the same as their current one under Paul Hurststs, Woodses shortly later earned a far better job in charge of the Saddlers' academy. Without taking anything away from Town's current youth side, the mistreatment of Neil seems another awful blunder by the regime at Blundell Park, the adverse consequences of which may continue to be felt for some time.

Over at the Grimsby Telewag another set of FORMER Grimsby Town players are making the headlines. Liam Hearn is out until Chrimbo. Charlie I'Anson is great. And the annual 'Cameron Jerome has moved clubs' story is accompanied by Jack Lester performing the 'sad to see my old club so knackered, but it'll pick up eventually, right?' set piece. Now there's revolution, but they don't know what they're fighting. And former Mariner Scott Neilson becomes a current Mariner this Saturday at Gateshead. "He can give us that bit of magic," insists the manager. "Not a lot," retorts a messageboard, waving its wand again.

And last up for now, your old friend and mine, Guest Diary, has been in touch to point out either a statistical quirk or a worrying trend in Town's early-season results, depending on your outlook on the world and vitamin intake. "I just noticed that everyone we have played so far has just the one league point from their three games," he says. "If not for Town they'd be the bottom four (with Alfreton who are pointless)." Thanks, GD – lovely to hear from you as always. It's a harsh assessment of Nicky Law but probably a fair one.
