Your London Diary reporting on a Thursday, and what a treat to wake up to. Grimsby Town may have won 1-0 on Tuesday night against a potential Conference threat, but only 24 hours later we went on and tonked Corby 13-1 (thirteen).
Admittedly it's not the same Town team from the night before, and the game was just a friendly, but it's still a team of Town players past present and future that won. Our dear old Danny North even played and scored. The former Grimsby wonder boy is just training with the Mariners ahead of the Irish league starting back up – and even though this was clearly stated on the SNOS, it didn't hinder the rumour mill from grinding its gears on the twittersphere. "OH DANNY BOY IS BACK!! Wowoo!" "Calm down and get back to your stickers, you'll wake the children".
Present player Ross Hannah scored five (5) which is two more than a hat-trick, but doesn't have a name. A pent-trick? A fiver? A greed? Agreed. And possible-future-player but-nobody-really-knows-yet Hamish Watson scored a hat-trick (3) to pop his name in the mix of names currently not in the mix. You keep shifting that weight, pal. If Jarman can do it, so can you.
Playing Corby yesterday was a probably a nice little confidence boost for the fringe players who haven't cemented a place in the starting XI. But to be fair, there are probably only about seven (7 etc) that have. It must have been like when I was at school, and when I wasn't doing particularly that well in maths, I'd be sent to spend a lesson with the set below, which would scare the living daylights out of me. They're bigger and scarier and not as sharp. Get into the top set lads, quick.
I'm still doing my research about Town keeper strips being green and have already received a few emails, but if you have any info on why they can't be green or what seasons they were green and we were good, then bang them over.
Lastly, it's me banging the 'modern football is toss' drum. I love going to see Grimsby play. I'm used to the Conference but would love to see us in the League with slightly more money. Money that we have worked hard at, no matter how many times we've tried. I would love to see the whole town and county work together so that we can line the streets and see that open-top bus with Craig Disley hold the Conference trophy in his hands while the keys to the town jingle in his suit pocket. That's the football I love: proper grassroots community football where you can see the whites of everyone's eyes. What do I hate? Everything about these pricks.
UTM! Up Proper Football!
