Just another manic Wednesday
10 December 2014
Day 11 of no action now and your London Diary will really be scraping the barrel this morning... but WAIT, what's that? We played a game?
The club announced on Monday that they would be playing a Boston United XI in a friendly, and it turns out the Pilgrims fielded a Boston United XI under-XXI team. The Mariners stuck out a 'strong' team which included players from the squad (currently at XXVI), complete with a mystery trialist. Our lot came out as winners by IV to nothing.
So, good idea to get the boys out running on our pre-winter break, and reports from the game suggest that young Nicky Walker had a bit of a blinder, scoring one and setting up another. Well done, even if it was against children (Walker is actually XX himself, so it's OK, guys).
What else to say? Well, not much really. Annoyingly, our game with Dover on 4 January has been postponed as they are giant killers in the cup, which is a right old bummer as a few of us exiled in London had planned a jolly. Even though we're down in the fifth (Vth) division, I do like visiting new grounds, and Dover was one I was looking forward to. Never been before – I'm more of a Hull or Folkestone kinda guy, you know? Have some rival fish 'n' chips, take in the white cliffs, and I do like visiting a train station that has a weird surname, like Dover Priory or Cheltenham Spa, or Bristol Temple Meads. No doubt the game will be rearranged to a cold Tuesday in March when it's snowing. Bah humbug.
Lastly, a nice bit of nostalgia. I love old Grimsby Town kits. I'm lucky enough to have a few in my wardrobe, either ones from being a kid or ones that I've managed to buy online without remortgaging the house (I actually rent – I live in London, remember). A friend of a friend posted this link and I nearly cried with excitement. Nice little story. I feel a Kickstarter campaign about to begin… Great work lads. UTM!
