Eat the royals

28 December 2016

It's Christmas and we've all had a few drinks. That's my excuse, anyway, for reading this revelation from the Mariners' superb new official Twitter and thinking, OK, obviously one was for Bogle, but which other Town player have we knocked back a bid for?

As it turns out, of course, this was part of a long sequence of tweets from an interview with Smiley Marcus immediately after the Accrington game on boxing day. Town's enthusiastic manager shared, among other things, the news that it is he who has made initial attempts to bring in two new players (one presumably being that Osborne lad from Solihull), and no clubs have as yet approached GTFC for any of ours. We've all had a few drinks, and the semantic ambiguities of the passive case aren't helping.

Your original/regular Diary will not be alone, however, in expecting Town's phone to start ringing one day soon. I suppose if some desperate club offers daft money for Omar then he'll have to be off, but in my view your Nottingham Forests and your Fulhams are likely to want to watch him a few more times to inform a decision on whether they can develop him into a complete second-flight player. The first bid for Bogle is far more likely to take the form of somebody like Peterborough completely taking the piss.

It remains to be seen whether Omar can be alternatively persuaded, as the club is currently attempting, to extend his summer 2018 sell-by date. Another player whose contractual status has been up in the air is promising young defender Danny Collins, whose deal was due to expire in January. You might need to help me here – I've heard Collins has signed until the end of the season, but I haven't seen official confirmation anywhere. Shout up if you're better informed than me. It can't be that hard.

In other news, Gary Whild is now being paid, which I can only assume is fairly reassuring for him and his family; and in the Telewag you can find out what Smiley Marcus thinks about Town's proposed new stadium/two mugs in front of some Lego (spoiler: he generally seems to believe it's quite a good idea). Now, are we keeping Dean Henderson, or what?
