The Diary

We have a big game ahead of us

27 September 2019

OK, enough already. It is early on Friday morning and all I can read about is Chelsea. Is someone onto Exeter City asking if we can postpone their game so we can hold a ticker-tape parade instead? And has anyone decided whether it should be the players or the fans who are on the open-top bus? Or perhaps we should just find a stadium where there is no danger of a match being played, fill it, and spend 90 minutes cheering ourselves.

The dominant tone on social media used to be we should forget about the cups and concentrate on the league. Domestic Diary is all for a decent cup run, but I wouldn't go so far as to say we should forget about the league. And tomorrow, in case anyone has forgotten, we are away to the league leaders, unbeaten in the first ten matches of the season. Which almost reminds me of a time we went to another St James Park. Now that was a day to be proud of.

There will be team news, later. To be fair, no-one should have been at Blundell Park or Cheapside yesterday to take questions about the weekend and project our thinking forward instead of back. Cod Almighty Towers is also depleted today, so we've had to write this diary early.

The Town players will be knackered. A win tomorrow, even a draw, would be a significant achievement. Certainly better than losing 7-1.

If you can't make it to Exeter, or even if you can, you can see history being made on Sunday. Grimsby Town Women will play their second-ever competitive home game, but their first at Blundell Park. Barton United are the opponents and kick-off is at 2pm.

Enjoy your weekend.
