Cod Almighty | Diary
Repeats and no treats
11 May 2020
Domestic Diary doesn't really have a lot for you today.
There is nothing we have read in the last few days to suggest a realistic prospect of division three and four games resuming any time soon. The speculation is about resolving the season's outstanding issues using a points per game formula, of greater or lesser sophistication but all pointing to the ultimate truth, as elaborated by Casual Diary four weeks ago: Town are going nowhere.
Thinking aloud, I wonder if anyone has thought that the season that should be under threat is not what remains of 2019-20 but 2020-21? Play out what remains of the season when, and only when, it is safe to do so for players, officials and spectators. Then see what kind of new season there is still space for after that. Or perhaps have an extended pre-season with a cup competition, then pick up where we left off in February or March. Actually, what I have in mind is not so different to what John England suggested here at the start of the crisis, so ignore me.
If this is beginning to read like Cod Almighty is making like the broadcasters and repeating old stuff, then I have to admit the main reason I am here is to urge you to read, fresh on Cod Almighty today, Lee Johnson's lovely evocation of how football can open up a child's world. Not for me it didn't mind: schoolboy football left me with a deep-seated fear of being shouted at.
I'm off before you make me cry.
