Post-sack postbag

25 September 2008

Here is a radical new idea we've had at Cod Almighty: you send us letters, we'll publish them every week, a bit like in the old days when you put letters in a post box and a postman carried them around in a bag... I know, we'll call it a postbag. What's that you say? Someone's done it before?... We've done it before? Our memories don't stretch back that far... Let's see what we've got...

I may disagree with what you say ...

So it's finally come... Alan Buckley has gone.

First and foremost - it surely has to be said the guy needs to be appreciated for what he achieved for our club - no-one could, or should, argue that fact. He put us on the football map, gave us a reputation of a decent football side who often achieved more than they should. For that Alan - I thankyou..you gave me one of the best moments of my life when Grimsby walked out on that hallowed turf at Wembley in 98, brought tears to my eyes (of joy).

Secondly, I appreciate it's a decision and subject of immense interest to all Town fans, and one that some will agree and some not. What shouldn't happen and sadly is, is the slating of Buckley - personal stuff as well - which is uncalled for. His last (is it? funny old game) tenure at the club hasn't worked out - in my opinion he was out the game too long, the game had changed, the league had changed, he struggled tactically, changed things every 10 minutes, could not get the players in he wanted due to financial restraints, location etc, seemingly couldn't motivate the players, made a panic signing that backfired - and had lost the crowd. I feel that was the over riding factor in today's decision - the chairman knows that crowds of 2900 or so cant be continued if we are to survive - something had to give. I'm sure it was a decision he didnt want to make - but income and the clubs survival chances dictated.

So what now? What does the future hold? Who knows? I think what we do all know is it isn't going to be easy, or an immediate answer to our problems found - but either way - all opinions should be entitled, whether you agree or not - todays piece on your site having a dig at those who didn't agree with your stance is as bad as those who've been calling Buckley.

Letters Ed responds: ... but I will defend to the death my right to say how much I disagree. Seriously, CA will gladly publish cogent letters criticising the record of Alan Buckley, or taking issues with any other articles we publish. What we find hard to take is the mindless vilification of a man whose overall record with the club deserves far, far better.

Deep throat

Gents, I am told that our amazing chairman had a meeting with the players after Lord Buckley was sent on holiday, and his opening line was:

'The King is Dead, Long live the King'.
Now, I know that Fenty wants to be Mayor of Grimsby (don't we all), but trying to take the Archbishop of Canterbury's post at the next coronation... The man is amazing. Sorry, the man is a twat.

Wattley

I've just noticed (two days too late) that if you run the names of our former management team together, Brangelina style, you get 'Butkiss'.

Oh what a missed opportunity! I will never get to use such a splendid if puerile joke! Please Mr. Fenty, appoint another manager whose name begins 'Bu...' (Butler for player-manager?) so all my work isn't in vain.

Wear Fenty on your chest with pride

Can you guys pop the being John Fenty collage on a T-shirt please. I am still furious and am in mourning. Keep up the good work guys someone. Has to ruffle the feathers.

Letters Ed responds: We've not got much cash going spare at the moment (credit crunch, having our name associated with Tom Newey this season, that kind of thing). Just save the image, nip along to a local printers and get them to do one.

Up the Mariners

I think the song is brilliant and should be played at every home game as the teams come out. Now! I have a problem. I want to download the song to my mobile phone as its ring tone but can't seem to do it. Has anyone any ideas please?

from Jim Smith

Letters Ed responds: If you have a phone that plays MP3 files you should be able to transfer the song over to your phone and set the song as your ringtone. If your phone can't set MP3 files as ringtones, you're out of luck [Not really the Letters Ed, who has scarcely mastered talking, let along using a mobile phone, but he has mastered plagiarism]

Thatcherite businessman seeks armchair supporters

Hi there,

I have a website called http://www.live-footballontv.com

It shows comprehensive listings of all of the live football matches that are shown on television in the UK. It is 100% focussed on football, and this allows it to be the most up to date, accurate and in-depth football TV guide around.

This is the first website that I have designed, however I am a professional internet marketer and first and foremost an obsessive football fan. I won't stop until this site is hugely successful. My site is already featured on the BBC sports TV schedule webpage.

I am wondering if you would be so kind as to review my site on your blog/site in return for link. If this is not possible would you still consider a reciprocal link exchange?

Please let me know either way.

from Neil

Letters Ed responds: We wouldn't normally, but as our readers have spent the weekend racking their brains trying to imagine places where people might be playing worse football than Blundell Park, this might just be a site they want to explore

Why have they sent this to us?

We are a design company based in grimsby Producing intelligent creative web and print design for over 10 years in Web Design, Print Design and Web Development offering Web design, PHP Web Development, eCommerce, Graphic Design, Identity and Photography.

from Steven

Letters Ed responds: Yes, fine, but I'm still not quite clear what you actually do? Could you run it past me one more time? And then tell me why you think we should be interested.

Think you can better that? Show us.
