I've got a pasty in the oven for you

17 November 2021

READ commands the Rotherham site. Doing as you're told you'll find that Town's reserve clash with the Millers scheduled for yesterday was postponed and "Both clubs are currently in contract to arrange a new date for the fixture." In contract you say? That's it, the ball's burst, game's over, the internet has gone to pot.

It might be an innocent typo on a depressing template-driven website but it's enough to light a fuse. In a rare moment of self-reflection, Daubney questioned if he'd been unfair last week to dismiss the Grimsby Telegraph as trolling clickbaiters. When you consider it, that description could apply to most of t'internet. It started with perfection in the form of chart cds from Hong Kong for 99p including shipping and a place to find the name of that Back to the Future extra. Now look at it, with most sites making chucking out time in Manchester look respectable and orderly.

Even when you get some sensible content presented on an accessible site you'll get loonies polluting it. Look no further than Jason Stockwood's fine Guardian piece this morning. Literally look no further than the piece, if you do, you risk reading the the belligerent misinterpretations in the comments section. If the backlash to our rough guide is a measure, this nonsense will grow exponentially when the Wrexham forum lads crawl out of bed around 2pm and hear that someone has used the words "Hollywood" and "Wrexham" on a website.

Maybe the problem is Daubney getting out of the wrong side of the bed. Who can blame him when greeted this morning with a new addition to the Things Have Gone Very Wrong manual. Yes, there's Mattie Pollock, who left to join a PL academy now starring on loan for Cheltenham two divisions above us and scoring winners in the FA Cup. Try going back to 1985 in your DeLorean and explaining that to someone on the Pontoon. Or the fans who called him slow and a bit rubbish last season. What's that, forgotten busted flush Idris El Mizouni doing damage as well? Ah, here.

Come on, it's Wednesday, gee yourself up, man. Well for inspiration, look no further than the ticket sales for Friday night. Four losses in a row is when we're needed most and it looks like, despite the game being on TV, Town fans are stepping up. The sting of the defeat at Aldershot brought out some negativity as losses seem always destined to. However, just as one victory or even ten, is not going to alter the long term course of GTFC, neither is one defeat.

The core message from the Chair of "taking the club and community on a journey" is unchanged from his previous Guardian articles. The journey isn't going to be a day trip to Mablethorpe. As nice as that would be, there's a greater plan.

There have been times this season when it looked like Pettits and Stockwoods had access to a magic wand. Town's flying start is of course welcome but it also raises expectations on Paul Hurst and his side. Perversely this burdens the long term project, making it appear that all the club needed was a bit of spit and polish to fix years of degradation. The reaction in the form of Southend ticket sales suggests the fans understand this isn't the case and, like the new owners, are prepared to back the club for the long haul.
