Don't believe what you read, kids
12 July 2022
I'm typing this from inside my fridge in a desperate attempt to maintain a normal body temperature for someone who spent their formative years in and around Blundell Park, and the last few decades high enough in the Upper Myenergi/Youngs/Smiths/Findus* to observe shipping movements in the Humber. If ever there is a consideration to rebuild the corners and refurbish rather than move, that view must be high on the list of positives.
There's not much going on at the moment, so much so that the Telegraph has tried desperately to print a story about Town. It's understandable given the positive vibe around the club, but the best they can muster is Town fans are "set for one of the best away days" for our first match against Leyton Orient. This is based on categories such as location and amenities. With Millwall being top, "second on the list is Grimsby's trip to Leyton Orient". Not that it matters for this, but beware what the Telegraph tell you because, whilst The Os are very high in the list, Premier League clubs are excluded because they don't start till a week later and Birmingham City, who are higher, are away themselves so nobody else gets that awayday. If they will present a meaningless study like this to manufacture a story for football, just imagine what else they do.
The study was commissioned by a betting company so I won't link to it but if you asked Town fans about their best awaydays, there would be a lot more involved than the practicalities. I'm sure Leyton Orient would be high for many, particularly the southern-based fans, but Wrexham must be up there, and their facilities were atrocious. Notts County is always a good day out. Bradford will be decent, you just know it. Some of that is emotional for us and not just how many eateries there are within walking distance. For the record, I don't doubt our first game will be a fabulous day because it's going to be the best reunion ever, getting players and fans back together.
If you are planning on renewing or getting a season ticket, don't forget you now only have one week until the early bird offer ends. Don't miss the cut-off!
