Don’t tell him Pyke!

8 August 2023

Well, I enjoyed Saturday, although obviously I would have preferred a win. No goals but some exciting looking prospects in midfield give me hope for this season. I was just happy to be there, not least because I'd muddled up my dates and until fairly recently thought I would miss the first game of this campaign. Add to that a pre-game family chippy dinner, it was definitely a win for me.

Respect for the quick-witted shout from the Pontoon after 95 minutes when Pyke was booked: "Don't tell him Pyke". I'm still chuckling about it today. I hope the referee had enough of a sense of humour to smile too. Hopefully a booking won't be too regular an occurrence though.

I was perusing Twitter yesterday evening and saw this photo from a Colin, a Town fan, with the statue in Meadow Lane of Jimmy Sirrel and Jack Wheeler, both County legends. I love the fact that both men are in the moment of a game, not formally posed. Jack Wheeler undertook many roles: trainer, coach, caretaker manager and scout. An absolute stalwart of their club. It got me to thinking who would Town fans recreate in bronze? Alan Buckley comes to mind and my personal favourite was George Kerr but a statue of either them? I'm not sure about that. At least it's not Michael Jackson at Fulham. Who would you choose?

Mansfield away tonight in the Milk aka Littlewoods aka Rumbelows aka CocaCola aka Worthington's aka Carling aka Capital One aka Carabao Cup. There are a few names from the past! Sponsored by a television rental company? What the hell was that, youngsters might wonder? Love the new away strip by the way with Luke Waterfall looking moody. Let's hope it's lucky for us. Unusually it's a 7:30 kick-off, so don't be late!

UTM!
