Once a Mariner, always a Mariner

12 October 2023

Saturday's game with Accrington Stanley has been designated a "Mental Health Awareness Matchday" by Town. Details can be found in an article on the official site, which expands on the club's relationship with mental health services provider NAViGO.

Also mentioned is the naming of a local NAViGO facility in Matt Tees' honour. With dementia blighting Matt's latter years, it is a thoughtful and moving gesture, as described by GTFC director Kris Green here. With the club playing an important role throughout the town's history, perhaps more of the people who have helped make it so special should be recognised in such a manner, by means of park, building or street names.

It can sometimes seems trite or clichéd but Town players become extended family. It's why Matt's struggles were so painful to see and makes today's news of Craig Shakespeare's ill-health hit hard. We wish Craig all the best in this horrible time.
