Forget safe standing, let’s corral the constant whingers
26 March 2024
I never expected us to get anything on Saturday so I wasn’t overly disappointed with the result. Realistically it felt like a point lost at most. I was disappointed with our apparent lack of fight in the first half but we did seem to try a bit harder in the second. That could be because Wrexham coasted but it didn’t appear to be the case. We said on the day that the substitutes make a difference - and the manager obviously thought the same.
The playoff game was a beautiful moment in Town’s history and long will we treasure it but let’s be honest, that game could have gone either way as I think we were in “never say die” mode. It obviously hurt some of the Wrexham fans more than they will let on because they went straight on social media on Saturday and had a gloat along the lines of “we don’t care about you beating us then as we’ve done better since”. Personally, win or lose, I like to chat about the game to friends, family or someone in the pub. I don’t get the need to taunt the opposition fans or indulgence in so called “bantz”. Maybe we should be just be pleased that neither team are currently playing in non-league. I certainly hope Town continue in that way.
Unfortunately, after six games unbeaten and the team looking more resilient, one bad day at the office meant the Town gloom-mongers were out in force, wallowing in their pessimism and relishing the schadenfreude of our poor results. The bloke in the row behind us had the best Saturday afternoon he’s had in a while. He must have been well chuffed. I would move seats to get away from his negative commentary and criticism but I’d probably find I was sitting close to someone else with similar negativity. I should put some earphones in and listen to John Tondeur but it would be just my luck that there would be a delay over the internet and that would get frustrating too.
Mmm, maybe we could create a moaning section and sit them all together! And add in an angry/vitriol section too please. Don’t get me wrong, I get just as frustrated as the next fan when we’re playing poorly but some of the reactions around us at the ground or online are massively over the top. Over the summer the club should run some anger management classes alongside the football courses.
Anyway, on to the Easter weekend matches with games coming as thick and fast as Christmas, but hopefully with better weather. Again, they are not easy games but there won’t be any that are stress-free this season. Let’s just keep doing better than those below us. Hang in there Mariners!
