Unforgettable promise

12 June 2024

Newbegin Diary writes: Last December, during Dave Artell's first game in charge of Town - a 2-1 win over Crewe - two players in particular seemed to throw a burden off their backs, suggesting that they were on the cusp of take-off. One was Anthony Glennon, who was released five months later. The other was Alex Hunt, who yesterday joined York City.

They say of some that they aren't great goalscorers but scorers of great goals. For the Mariners, Hunt was not a great player but a player of great games. You could make up a showreel of his highlights which would have the scouts drooling, and perhaps its better for everyone if we edit out of our memories some stretches of anonymity. There's a fine player in the making there, but Hunt won't make it at Grimsby. Its a shame - more poignant to reflect on lost potential than the end of a rewarding career - but it doesn't mean it isn't the best move, for him and for us.

Meanwhile, if you are convinced that selling Hunt, for an undisclosed fee, is a major blunder, bookmark the post where you say so now, don't wait until he achieves a hat-trick of assists in the third round of the FA Cup. Statisticians are still working on the hindsight ratio at play in the case of Danilo Orsi: they had to throw all their old workings in the wastepaper bin with the rumours that Stockport are about to buy him for half a million. Lets just say the voices saying how stupid Grimsby were to get rid of him are far louder now than they were this time last year.

That's enough for today. There's more cogent reading elsewhere.
