Watch out for when Paul Hurst starts wearing his boxers outside his tracksuit

27 May 2014

Chris Doig has signed a contract that will make him "assistant player-manager". Pedants may point out that unless Paul Hurst was serious about dusting off his boots towards the end of last season, he will strictly speaking be 'player assistant-manager', or of course, as Cod Almighty suggested almost a year ago, 'Deputy Doig'.

It is a great day for nominative determinism. Following our efforts to reassemble the Minstermen's Conference play-off-winning side of two years ago, Paul Hurst today gives slightly more houseroom than he usually offers close-season speculation over possible interest in Wes York. Efforts to replace Andy Cook, Andi Thanoj and Alex Rodman are thought to be focussing on Rao Stryker, Picker Pass and Mercurio L'winga.

Unfortunately, the preceding days have been great largely for Franco-ists, wealthy businesspeople turning community assets into their playthings and convicted criminals. And that's just talking about the weekend's football results. Against that backdrop, Hurst's thoughts on 'League 3' have a certain Miliband-ite quality, but it's a start. Think of him as Clark Kent.
