Is Chris Doig an exciting appointment as assistant manager? Not really. But is anyone, ever? The disappointment in evidence here and there at this minor administrative reshuffle seems to your original/regular Diary to be much more a case of people looking for something to moan about than a genuine cause for grievance. Granted, I am a long way from being one of those obsessive fans for whom their football club is pretty much the only thing in their lives. But I can't help thinking that if you ever get excited about any assistant manager appointment, you might need to give a little consideration to getting out more.
That said, I hope Doig can find Town some decent players. There are a few aspects of life around GTFC which seem to have improved since the departure last autumn of joint manager Rob Scott. Fewer outbreaks of pointless, terrifying fury, for one thing. But look back at the quality of players who've come in during Paul Hurst's solo tenure, compared with those who arrived while Shouty was on the scene. Perhaps a little help on the scouting front for the erstwhile Shorty might help to avoid another Jamal Fyfield situation. Satnav at the ready, Doigy.
Free-market capitalism killing football, chapter 15,206: League 3. The Football League is said to be ready to offer the Premier League an alternative to fucking everything up even more with B teams. A number of sources report that FL chief Shaun Harvey will suggest Premier B teams enter the Football League Trophy instead. I actually think this is a reasonable idea – and one for which a precedent has already been set. Premier League clubs have been fielding their B teams in the FA Cup and League Cup for some years already, so one more shouldn't be too much of a stretch.
So before we finish, let's just make sure we're up to date with the transfer market? Wes York – now officially a "Grimsby Town target" – isn't just a winger, apparently, but can play up front and he's fast and everything. I've never seen him play, Burnsy, but obviously we should sign him. And the players who've left? Jonathan Hedge has gone to Telford United. Dayle Southwell has gone to Boston United. Tom Charlesworth has gone to Boston Town. Barry Conlon has gone to hell.
