I blame them foreign players
9 July 2014
Word up! London Diary here with another waffle-packed Wednesday entry. Not sure if you've been following the football but yesterday we witnessed something astonishing. Modern football never ceases to amaze me. Five years ago, nobody would have seen this coming, and people would have laughed in your face if you suggested it. But yesterday, after four years in the making, Jack Barlow signed for Boston United on a free.
I can hardly believe it myself. When we sold Barlow in 2009 for £100,000, a fair amount of people slagging off the then chairman (currently not chairman, but actually is the chairman) Jonty Fenty (Con) for flogging him too quickly and making a quick buck. "When all is said and done, they have the ability to get Jack," is what he said at the time. But clearly the ability to nurture and develop is something Hull City (not Tigers) didn't have.
When I saw the article pop up on my Twitter feed, I'm not sure why, but I felt a little bit sad. CA has touched on this in the past, but I really do think it's all a bit sad. I hope Jack has a bloody good time at Boston, lifts his head high and wins everything he can, and then, who knows, we may even try to snatch him from Boston in a few years and be taken to a tribunal. "We have the ability, Jonty!"
I'm sure the majority of you were watching the World Cup semi-final last night with your jaw around your breast-plate. It was a weird sensation watching five-times world champions taken apart so easily. I'm currently in Spain on a three-day holibob and so watched the match in a lovely little outdoor restaurant complete with outdoor TV. We had a German couple next to us, and the man was ecstatic when Germany scored their first four. When they popped in a fifth he was less energetic. And when the sixth went in he actually said the word 'sorry'. What a night. I'd have smashed the place up and ordered a 'large lager', obviously.
These things happen though, and as GTFC pointed out on Twitter late last eve, it even happens to the best of them.
It's the first friendly tonight. We're playing Cleethorpes. Get down there and support the lads. We should win 7-1 too, and remember, if we don't we need Hurststtsts out. SEVEN OR NUFFINK HURSTSTS!! WOO! UTM!!
