The end of December

21 December 2015

That so many of your latest letters are about brothers is all the excuse I need to dust down some early Leonard Cohen

My brother, my killer

Greetings!

Your author is mistaken. An article on the Moore brothers did appear in When Saturday Comes. However, it was Issue 35 and was published in January 1991, which is perhaps why your author missed it.

Far from Bill Brewster overlooking the Moore family, he co-wrote the article with me. It was called "Moores the pity", and featured as part of the "Losers" series. As the title suggests, it wasn't entirely fawning...

Best,

from Rob McIlveen

A rose in your teeth

Ah well, you've got me going there. I offer you the Bloomers: father, son and grandson. Two Jimmies; senior, a centre-forward who scored a good few goals in the early fifties; and junior, a defender, who played in the sixties. Then Matt, also a defender, who had two or three short spells with the Mariners about ten or so years ago and I noticed was in the Harrogate squad against Town in the recent FA Cup match.

Jimmy senior died a few years ago. I heard a lot about him from my father. In his day we played in the old Third Division North. His best season, for goals, was the one when we came second to Lincoln. He and Billy Cairns scored a shedful that year. Alas, only one team went up.... so we didn't. Typical.

from Alan Readman

Letters Ed responds: Just in case anyone else looks it up as Alan says, Jimmy senior is Jimmy junior's father and Matt's grandfather, but Jimmy junior is not Matt's father.

What can I possibly say?

Add to the list, Clarrie and Derek Williams; goalkeeper and forward.

from Raymond Lawrance

Letters Ed responds: That we have a goalkeeper is encouragement for a dynastic XI, albeit a somewhat defensively-minded one: Moores, Futchers and Matt and Jimmy Bloomer (junior) in defence, Cockerills in midfield and Jimmy Bloomer senior with Derek Williams up front.

Eleven more (far from thin) gypsy thieves

Dear Ref

Re: Lincoln v GTFC, 28.12.15

Please protect Conor Townsend. I predict an assassination attempt by one of the Lincoln players at about 1pm on 28 December. A similar crime was committed at this fixture 26.12.14 on a Mr C. Magnay.

You have been warned.

Best regards
